Sarah's Visit to Kisima

6th August 2025

Hi everyone, my name is Sarah and I recently spent three weeks at Kisima. Where do I even begin?! Those three weeks showed me so much about what Kisima is about. A school which is centred around Christ and encourages hard work. The students and staff are an inspiration. Their dedication was evident right from the beginning. Everyone was so welcoming and loving right from the start. The students all interact with one another as one big family. The adults work so committedly, whether that be in the kitchen, in the classroom, at the gate or keeping the maintenance of the school.

During my time here, Catherine and I worked together to complete a variety of projects. Starting with the long-neglected netball court - we mowed the lawn, sanded and painted the posts and marked out the court. I had the privilege of teaching the Form Twos and Threes netball; hopefully it is a new sport that can be added to their numerous hobbies!

As part of their 20th anniversary, Kisima had received a keyboard so I worked with four groups of three in teaching them how to play, and also got to show a few how to play the flute. How quickly they all picked it up was unbelievable!

Catherine also turned me into a librarian. We recorded new books on a spreadsheet, labelled and categorised them, stamped them and then wrapped them in plastic before they went into the library.

I also got to learn more about Kenyan culture when the kitchen staff kindly taught me how to make chapatis. We showed the music club how to country dance and in return the students taught me some of their dances which was super fun.

It was great to engage in the Christian aspect of the school, by teaching some hymns and leading a Bible study. Sunday services were a privilege to attend, accompanying the singing with music and listening to the students' presentations - it was so good to see how God is working in their lives.

It was so encouraging to chat with some of the students about the impact Kisima has had on them and how they feel about their sponsors; they do not take the support for granted.

I'm so grateful to God for this opportunity and pray that I will be back again sometime soon!
