A Trip to the Del Monte Pineapple Plantation

Our Form Four students are now well informed about pineapple farming, thanks to a recent trip to the Del Monte pineapple plantation in Thika. After a very early start they had a long and wet journey and arrived to find pineapple plants as far as the eye could see! Unfortunately the muddy conditions meant that the school bus couldn't access all parts of the plantation, but they still learnt about the whole farming process, from land preparation, soil testing and planting, to pest control, security and harvesting. Everyone enjoyed some fruit juice before proceeding to Nairobi to visit the National Museum and returning to school through yet more rain!
